Jeevan Jyoti Hostel

In 1972, Brs. Geroge D'Souza and Valerian Viegas, who are now Priests of the Diocese, came to help the school. Because of the hard work of these two young men, it was possible to start a hostel for 50 boys in temporary accommodation in 1973.

Within the short period of a year they were able to train the first batch of boys of the Jeevan Jyoti Hostel.

His Eminence, Late Sergio Cardinal Pignedoli had visited this institution in 1972. His love, warm smile and affection remained fresh for a very long time in the memory of the people who met him. He had promised that he would help to establish a hostel in Pakyong.

On his return to Rome, he put the school in touch with MISEREOR, of Germany, who in turn financed the construction of a comfortable hostel building to house the boys.

It was inaugurated by His Excellency, Shri B.B Lal, the Governor of Sikkim, on 14th November, 1975. Jeevan Jyoti Hostel came up because there was a need. It had been a home for many boys of Sikkim, West Bengal, Bhutan and Nepal.

After Late Fr. J Kunnath, Fr. Albert Cordeiro, Fr. Basil Pereira, Fr. Clement Tirkey present Bishop of Jalpiguri Diocese and Fr. Sylvester Crasta served this institution with generosity, dedication and efficiency

Introduction of Co-Education and Nirmala Girls' Hostel

The establishment of a convent in 1973 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny was an important milestone in the life of this institution. The late Mother John Mary, with the first group of Sisters in 1973, rendered the most praiseworthy and dedicated service for the cause of girl's education in the school. Till then, the management was reluctant to introduce co – education in the High School section. In the same year, thanks to the efforts of Brs George and Valerian, it was possible to upgrade the school.

Mother John Mary was a real inspiration to all the staff. In spite of her old age and failing health, she always wanted more work. Till she breathed her last in March 1977, she spent herself fully. Her indomitable will, love for the poor and devotion to duty will be remembered for a long time to come, by all who came in contact with her. May god be her eternal reward!

The pressure from people was so great that the management could not but start a girl's hostel, although facilities available were far from satisfactory. 30 little girls constituted the first Nirmala Hostel under the management of the Sisters.
